Cost:
Va Residents: This course is free* and available to ALL Virginia healthcare professionals with or applying for a DEA license. *Virginia residents will need to register and create their profile first, and can then go to the course catalog to add the course. A Virginia address is required to bypass payment.
Non-Virginia Residents: This course is available for $45 to healthcare professionals outside of Virginia with or applying for a DEA license.
Overview
This online course will provide best practices for the therapeutic management of major opioid use disorders for all patient populations, with a special focus on interprofessional work practices to improve quality of care. Faculty will discuss current and emerging issues related to substance misuse behaviors and trends. This course has been developed for Physicians, Nurses, Physician Assistants, Psychologists, Socials Workers, Pharmacist and other members of the healthcare team.
Course Format
This self-paced course will be available online. Participants may complete some or all of the eight (8) modules, based on their interests and needs. Credit will be awarded based on participation, with one content hour per awarded per video module.
Desired Outcomes:
After completing this activity, participants should be better able to:
- Describe best practices for the therapeutic management of major opioid use disorders for all patient populations.
- Identify current and emerging issues related to substance misuse behaviors and trends.
- Evaluate clinical decision resources and innovative practices to diagnose and treat patients with substance and opioid misuses.
- Develop competencies for systems-based practices, interprofessional work practices and practice-based learning to improve quality of care and enhance collaboration.
Target Audience
This course has been developed for Physicians, Nurses, Physician Assistants, Psychologists, Social Workers, Pharmacists, and other healthcare team members, especially those renewing a DEA license who need to fulfill MATE law requirement for 8 hours of accredited substance abuse education.

In support of improving patient care, the University of Virginia School of Medicine and School of Nursing is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Nurses
The University of Virginia School of Medicine and School of Nursing awards up to 8 contact hours for nurses who participate in this educational activity and complete the post activity evaluation.
Pharmacist
Credit will be uploaded to CPE Monitor within 60 days of the end date of the activity. A certificate from our learning portal validates only learner participation. It will be the responsibility of the pharmacist or pharmacy technician to provide the correct information in order to receive credit for participating in this CE activity. Physician Assistants
The University of Virginia School of Medicine and School of Nursing has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 8.0 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. Approval is valid until July 30, 2025. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.
Psychologists
Continuing Education (CE) credits for psychologists are provided through the co-sponsorship of the American Psychological Association (APA) Office of Continuing Education in Psychology (CEP). The APA CEP Office maintains responsibly for the content of the programs. The University of Virginia School of Medicine and School of Nursing designates this live activity for a maximum of 8 continuing education hours.
Social Workers
As a Jointly Accredited Organization, The University of Virginia School of Medicine and School of Nursing is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. Social workers completing this course receive up to 8 general continuing education credit.
Hours of Participation
The University of Virginia School of Medicine and School of Nursing awards up to 8 hours of participation (consistent with the designated number of AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ or ANCC contact hours) to a participant who successfully completes this educational activity. The University of Virginia School of Medicine and School of Nursing maintains a record of participation for six (6) years.
